The ideal depth really comes down to personal preference and how you manage your coop. Some customers are happy with a light 1-inch layer, while others prefer a thicker bed of 3 to 4 inches. Based on feedback, a 1.5-inch depth seems to be the sweet spot for most backyard chicken owners.
To give you a clearer idea, here’s how much area a single 50-pound bag will cover at different depths:
One of the great benefits of our Chicken Sand is that it’s easy to maintain. It sifts like cat litter, allowing you to remove waste without losing much sand. Plus, since it’s free of clay, it won’t trap moisture or turn to mud. Once it’s down, it doesn’t need frequent replacing. Many of our customers simply top it off occasionally to keep things fresh.
We understand your concerns, and we’re happy to clarify.
Our Chicken Sand is sourced directly from the earth with no chemicals or additives. We use a wet mining process that vacuums sand and gravel from a large pond near the coast of Mississippi, ensuring an exceptionally clean product. After extraction, we dry the sand using hot air and carefully screen it for optimal texture.
Essentially, it is the same sand you might find at a beach, only washed in water with not additives of any kind and sized specifically for chicken coops.
The warning labels are a legal requirement, especially for products sold in California. The labels are important if the sand is misused—for example, during abrasive blasting, or if cut, ground, or mechanically pulverized—it can create dust that can be harmful if inhaled over a period of time. This is a standard precaution and warning that applies to all naturally occurring sands in the United States.
In its intended form, Premium Chicken Sand is clean, safe, and a 100% natural product for backyard chickens.
